A Rhyme Takes Time
Facebook, January 10-11, 2019
In my family, poetry was a constant. My mother was a poet (read some of her work here) and so was my dad (read some of his here). When my sister and I were reflecting on this, we noted that she was inclined to write poetry like our mother - for meaning and self-expression - while I am more inclined, like my father, to appreciate it for use in word play and occasionally intellectually; just as another way to write. So, I'm not a Poet with a capital-P, but sometimes I just enjoy the game of writing verse. This conversation with my friend, Sharon Flood Kasenberg, is an example. It started with her simple Facebook post. Then, fatefully, I responded. I include this because, well, this is my blog and I can, and it was fun so I want to save it, but also because a few times the thoughts run a little deep, even though the objective of the dialogue is simple.

Today I meditate and orate.
Might be horrid, might be great. |
Mediation and oration
Might fill you with trepidation; But ‘horrid’ wouldn’t be the case – You’re far too nimble-minded. So as you meet them face to face The challenges will be exscinded. (Yes, that rhyme’s not done quite rightly – That’s how it sometimes goes. I'd rather screw it up just slightly, Than write with boring prose.) |
Speaking? Mostly it's okay -
Know exactly what I'll say. But meditation means relaxation in a whole new way. Don't excel at relaxation (Source of serious vexation!) I can't deny it - but I WILL try it - and today's the day. |
How'd it go?
We'd like to know! And isn't this funny: I read "meditation" as doing "mediation" ! I guess you spent, instead of made, some money! Had I known, I would've told ya, meditation's fun. And if someone deserves some relaxation, Sharon, you're the one. |
Meditation, have to say
quite surprised, it was okay. Somehow stress did seem relieved simply 'cause I sat and breathed. As for speaking, that went well - At storytelling, I excel : ) |
Glad to hear it went well.
Meditation's really swell, Not just for helping you unwind, But unlocking secrets of the mind. |
Secrets unlock???
At that I might balk! |
Not to others, just to you,
So no risk of disclosure. And generally it's also true That hidden treasures gain exposure. Opportunities to feel, Opportunities to heal, It's really quite delightful, Learning what's inside your head can really be... insightful. |
that is true -
much exploring do I do mining out the gems inside, but some wealth we all must hide : ) |
Hide from others, absolutely;
But for ourselves, we should more astutely Let the truth become unveiled, Or risk that we become derailed When deeper sentiments arise Taking consciousness by surprise. |
To self-explore is really good -
I do it more than any should; on details I too oft obsess - it drives me crazy, I confess. Subjective is the quest for truth, Our biases grant us all proof; Perhaps from thought more should depart to focus more upon the heart, for goodness doth surpass belief and kindness is what grants relief. I do not fear what lies inside - my thoughts are deep; my heart is wide. |
What’s in the heart is often good,
Affecting mind, and act, and mood. But sometimes what the heart may will Affects us not for good, but ill. Both heart and mind are to be heeded To show where wills and strength are needed. Both refine, correct the other, Helping each of us discover, Something closer to what’s true, Beyond just a subjective view. As for bias, it’s a given, For each of us engaged in living. That’s why the heart and mind Urgently must be combined, So empathy and understanding, Neither one alone commanding, Chart the course we choose to follow, Not like the vague Oracle from Apollo. So keep those rivers running deep, Where thoughts emerge and feelings seep, That both influence conscious action As kindest, wisest benefaction. |
