#GiveThanks
Facebook & Twitter, November 21, 2020
On November 20, 2020, President Russell M. Nelson of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, requested that Latter-day Saints worldwide use their social media accounts as personal gratitude journals for seven days. My contributions begin on page 8.
#Gratitude Journal, Day 2.
Today, I want to express thanks for the primary #women in my life. The list is mostly chronological.
Today, I want to express thanks for the primary #women in my life. The list is mostly chronological.
First is my #grandmother on my mother’s side. She was a solid rock of integrity and energy. I am grateful that I got to know her, that I got to spend many days as a teenager visiting with her on my way home from school. She reminds me that paying attention to the details of life matters.
Note, my grandmother on my father’s side died when he was six. I never knew her, of course. But I have seen her picture. My looks come from her and her father. Amazing to discover, only years later, that the people I am most genetically indebted to are the family members I never met. Second, is my #mother. I mentioned her yesterday. A beacon of endurance in her younger years, years of being an unhappy wife, a single mom, a sufferer of depression and various mental health issues. Yet she loved life and sought joy in every moment. I appreciate the gift of her optimism and strength. Third, my #sister. Despite growing up fighting, we were always friends, never genuinely competitors. That friendship persists, and I have had many reasons to feel thankful for her, especially in these last few years as our children have grown and our parents have passed on. |
Fourth, I'll skip to my #daughter. Oh, the pain and sorrow we have felt for her during a troubled adolescence; and the joy and admiration as she has worked to regain control of her life, completing high school and now attending one of Ontario’s best universities, while raising…
Fifth: Our four beautiful #granddaughters. There are no words for the joy and wonder they both are and bring into our lives. I ache for the troubles they, like all women, will face as they mature and face the uglier truths of the world. I pray for their safety, happiness, joy, and fulfillment.
And sixth, last in this list, but first in my life, my #wife. The only women who presence I chose, whose companionship I fought for, whose enduring patience, love and support I cherish and need. I admire her immensely. There are many ways I wish I was more like her. I am grateful that she tolerates me enough to remain my life companion and partner, my lover, my best friend.
